House sends Obamacare repeal bill to White House

The Congress has, for the first time, sent legislation to the President repealing great swaths of Obamacare. The House passed repeal bills in every Congress since the health overhaul law was enacted, but the Harry-Reid-controlled Senate never acted, blocking the bills from reaching the Oval Office.
That changed today. The House voted 240 to 181 to pass the “Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act” following a Senate vote for passage of 52 to 47 in December.
The Congress, under Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speakers Paul Ryan and John Boehner, successfully navigated the lengthy and complex “reconciliation” process to pass legislation through both chambers that rescinds the mandates and taxes that are at the heart of the law. Mr. Obama will veto the bill, of course, but it sets an important marker for action that Congress could take next year under a new president who would sign the legislation.
Nearly six years since it was enacted, the health law is as unpopular as ever because of huge premium increases, disruptions in coverage, lost jobs and work hours, 20 new and higher taxes, and costly mandates on individuals and businesses that have harmed tens of millions of Americans. The Congressional Budget Office estimates today’s repeal bill would mean a reduction in the federal budget deficit by $516 billion over 10 years.
Most of those in the House who voted today to repeal Obamacare were not even in Congress when the law was passed in 2010, but they now have fulfilled a promise to their constituents. Speaker Ryan also has pledged to pass legislation through the House this year to show voters the preferred patient-centered alternative.
